The Car
At the end of the sixties, the American sports car market was dominated by Europe. Companies like MG and Triumph became lazy in pushing forward the development of the sports car, as nobody seemed able to provide any competition.

The launch of the Datsun 240z in 1969 changed all that. Here was a car with outstanding good looks (penned by Count Albrecht Goertz), dependable Japanese mechanics and superb handling thanks to all-indepedent suspension. Match this with the price tag of a Triumph GT6 and Datsun had a winner. The Datsun's only failing was a tendancy to rust, but it certainly wasn't the only car of the time to suffer from this sort of problem.

The original 240z lasted 5 years, enjoyed some success as a rally car and spawned an even sportier sharp nosed version of the 240z called the 240ZG. After this it was succeeded by the chunkier 260Z, which had a bigger engine, but less class.
